Knots for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Wait, is that a larks head or a bowline? Or is it a sheet bend? And what are all these knots for anyway? Join us in learning how to tie different knots, what they’re for, and how to use them on your next outdoor adventure.

Plus, take home your own knot practice set at the end!

Pando!

Have you heard of one tree spanning over 100 acres? That can't be real, right? But it is!

This is the story of the world's largest tree by both weight and landmass. Join us to learn the tale of our friend Pando, a single aspen tree that's made a name for himself. We'll make some aspen art and see what makes aspens so unique!

Cyanotypes & Anna Atkins

Cyanotype is a type of chemical printing dating back to the 1800s; Anna Atkins was the first person to use it for scientific purposes by making beautiful blue prints of algae and ferns. We’re making our own cyanotypes today of native plants and learning all about this brilliant female botanist.

Girls in STEM: Helen Martini and her Tiger Triplets

Helen Martini was the ultimate cat mom. She rescued baby tigers, lions, and more – in her own home! Learn the story of the first woman zookeeper at the Bronx Zoo, and the founder of their animal nursery. Join us for a story and a big cat craft, plus a look into life at a zoo in the 1950s.

In the US, women are 48% of the workforce but only 27% of the STEM careers. This family-friendly program explores a different science-loving lady each session through story, art, and more!

Registration is for one child with an adult. Adult must stay for the duration — this is not a drop-off program.

Indiana Dunes Day Trip

We’re spending our summer days with adventure on the brain! Join us for a trip to Indiana Dunes National Park for a day of hiking and picnicking among the dunes. Transportation provided. Meet at Fox Center.

Hikers under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a registered adult.

We do not recommend swimming on this trip, as lifeguards are only present at one beach. Ripcurrents and large waves do occur in Lake Michigan and can make swimming dangerous.
