Broom-Making Oct 17/31

October 17: Learn to weave 2-3 miniature turkey wing brooms using pine needles and traditional Appalachian broom-making techniques.
October 31: Create a miniature hawktail broom from pine needles and finish the series by weaving a functional whisk broom from broomcorn (sorghum).
Class Description: Explore the history of broomcorn (sorghum) and its importance in American craftsmanship, including its historical significance in Illinois. During this two-part workshop, participants will learn traditional Appalachian broom-making techniques while creating several miniature pine needle brooms in both the turkey wing and hawktail styles. The series concludes with weaving a full-sized broomcorn whisk broom. No experience is required, and all materials are provided.
