Welcome Letters

Hello Micro SCAW Families,

We’re so excited to kick off camp this upcoming Monday morning! 🎨✨ Our one-week adventure is set to begin at Hatch School, 1000 Ridgeland Ave, Oak Park, IL. Just a heads-up—our main entrance will be Door 6S, located off Ridgeland near the playground.

Before the fun begins, don’t forget to fill out the summer camp emergency form if you haven’t already. This helps us keep your child safe and happy by letting us know about emergency contacts and allergies. It’s a quick 15-minute or less task and must be completed by Sunday night. You can find the form [here] We cannot let them join camp unless the form is completely filled out-it’s the key to unlocking your child’s camp experience!

Drop-off will start daily at 7:45 AM on Ridgeland Ave. Look out for our friendly counselors and the bright orange and white banner! Just pull up, and they’ll assist the kids out of the car and into the fun. Please keep your car moving—no parking, and please remember to be considerate of fellow drivers. If you prefer to walk or bike, we’d love to see you at Door 6S!

From 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, campers will dive into three hour-long art classes and then enjoy a playground break and snack time. No themes here—just a variety of fun and creative projects!

At noon, we’ll shift gears to lunchtime and games. Please remember to pack a nut free lunch, nut free snack, and water bottle every day! If the weather’s on our side, we might venture out to Whittier School, Anderson Park, or Taylor Park for some extra outdoor fun until 1:40 PM.

Pick-up time is at 3:00 PM, but feel free to arrive starting at 2:45 PM. Please come through Door 6S and have your ID ready—we’ll need to check it before handing over your child! Only those on the authorized pickup list (filled out through Activity Messenger) will be able to take home campers.

For those in extended care, the fun continues with more relaxed activities, and you’re welcome to pick up your child anytime before 6:00 PM.

Got questions? Just give us a shout! Our email is: scaw@pdop.org. Our phone number is: 708-851-8454.

Looking forward to an amazing week of creativity and fun!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Stay and Play Camp! We have been having a wonderful time at camp and we are looking forward to having your child join us. Parents of returning campers, thank you for helping our day at camp go smoothly by sending snacks and water bottles each day, backpacks, socks (!) and such happy, fun children to be with. We appreciate you!

The camp location is the Indoor Playground at Stevenson Center, 49 West Lake Street. It is such a fun play space for children. In addition to free time for playing, at camp we sing a lot, read stories, try art projects, and have a snack. We practice simple routines: handwashing, taking off and putting on our shoes (Indoor playground rules: no shoes, socks required), “cleanup time” to put away toys, sitting together at snack time, story time and getting ready to go home.

Camp Theme: For Session 4 our theme will be a continuation from our favorite book Brown Bear, Brown Bear What DoYou See? It is the inspiration for our art projects, stories and activities. We have animals on 3 more pages in the book to carry us to the last week of camp.

More Camp Information

Camp Staff: Karen Bara, site supervisor, Whitney Brooks, counselor

Karen: I teach preschool with the Park District during the school year and enjoy time at summer camp with the two and three year olds. During the summer you will find me working in my backyard garden. Most years I am able to raise Monarch and black swallowtail butterflies. So far this summer I have found many caterpillars and look forward to the butterflies emerging and hopefully nature’s timing will allow our campers a close up look at these beautiful insects.

Whitney: I’m an Oak Park mom, and I’ve been teaching in the Early Childhood department at the Park District for the last 6 years. I look forward to making sure your children have a fun and safe camp experience.

Park District Emergency Form: Have your child’s emergency forms completed via Amilia Activity Messenger before their first day at camp. Children will not be admitted to start camp if this is not completed. Please disregard this reminder if you have already completed the emergency form. Follow the link below to complete the emergency form or use the QR code attached above. (If your child is returning for another session you do not need to fill in the form again.) https://activitymessenger.com/p/6pGPd0a (emergency form)

Arrival and dismissal procedures: Arrival and dismissal are at the glass door entrance on the east side of the Stevenson Center building by the basketball courts. As a reminder, class times are 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. At dismissal you will be asked to show a picture ID. Remind anyone who comes to pick up your child that an ID is required. They also must be on your authorized contact list. You may add names to your list. We need written permission or email confirmation that you are giving permission for an individual not on your authorized list to pick up your child.

Contact information: Stay and Play phone number: 708/851-8476. Call/text us if your child is not coming to camp, if you are going to be late at pick-up time or if there is an emergency. We understand there are delays, traffic and other unexpected events that happen so let us know and we can reassure your child you are on your way. Stay and Play email: Earlychildhood.staynplay@pdop.org / karen.bara@pdop.org

What to bring to camp:

    1. Each camp day your child should bring a re-fillable water bottle. Label with your child’s name. Children may use their water bottle when thirsty and at snack time.
    2. Snacks– Parents are asked to send a snack for your child each day. Snacks must be peanut/nut free to keep all of our campers safe from any allergy interactions. Also, some food items such as carrots and grapes can be choking hazards for young children so please cut into smaller pieces if sent with your child’s snack. Thank you!
    3. Backpacks are optional but helpful for bringing water bottles, snacks, extra supplies and taking home art projects. Please label with your child’s name.
    4. Indoor playground protocol: no shoes, socks are required. Please put an extra pair of socks in your child’s backpack or send separately to camp in a labeled Ziploc bag. In the summer it is easy to go without socks while wearing sandals or crocs and sometimes when a relative or friend bring your child to camp they come without socks. But we will have that spare pair to put on them! It is helpful if the shoes they wear to camp are easy for your child to take off and put on. We will always assist a child and work with them on self-help skills and independence.

We are not able to change diapers or pull-ups and will call you to come to camp should your child need a diaper change. If your child is in the process of potty training please let us know, so we can support your child.

Our Camp Schedule:

    • Arrival & Hand washing
    • Play time in the Indoor Playground – including art projects, play dough, puzzles, play kitchen and choice of toys
    • Outdoor time – with the exception of the first day of each session and weather permitting
    • Clean up – put away our toys
    • Hand washing for snack time
    • Snack time together
    • Story time
    • Getting ready to go home: putting on our shoes, jackets, back packs, etc.
    • Waiting for dismissal; the end to a happy day at camp

We use the Homeroom app to share photos of your child and activities at camp. We will email you an invitation to join Homeroom and then you are able to view photos of what is going on at camp!

It is not uncommon for some children to have separation anxiety or a difficult time on the first day of camp without a parent with them. Most of the time the tears and fears subside once they start playing and we can find things they really like to do. Sometimes it does take time to get adjusted. Be patient if that is your child. We have a lot of experience between us and will give your child the attention and support they need. If there are socialization difficulties or behavioral issues we will talk them over with you. We are aware that some children have not had opportunities to be in a group setting with other children and camp provides a place for playing together, learning to share and make friends. We hope the time spent in camp this summer will provide your child with lots of fun and new experiences! It makes our hearts glad you signed up for the next session. See you next week!

Parents!

Your coaches are very excited and looking forward to the upcoming Gymnastics Camp #1!

Gymnastics Camp #1 8am-3pm August 5-9, 2024

Please read the following information carefully so your camper is prepared for each day.

    • Lunch/snacks- Pack a lunch and separate snack that is peanut and tree nut free. Please make sure to utilize an ice pack in your child’s lunch to keep it cold. All campers will have a 20 minute morning snack break. Lunch is scheduled daily at 12:00pm.

    • Water bottle- Your child must bring a pre-filled refillable water bottle each day.
    • What to wear- Shorts and a T-shirt are appropriate for all gymnastics activities. Nothing with buttons, snaps, or zippers. Campers with long hair need to have their hair tied back with a soft ponytail. All campers need to wear gym shoes to camp each day as the activities they will be participating in require appropriate footwear in the afternoon for outside activities.
    • Personal items- We highly encourage parents/guardians to have their children leave their electronic devices and valuables at home. The park district is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
    • Medication- If your child will be taking medication during camp hours or has an allergy medication such as an Epi-Pen, it must be given to their coach in the original container that shows prescription, name of medication, date filled, physicians name, child’s name, and directions for dosage.

THANKS AND HAPPY SUMMER!

Hi Parents, Guardians, and Campers,

Welcome to Teen Scene! My name is Nana-Yaa Sarpey, but you can call me Nana. I will be your Site Supervisor this summer. I am entering my sophomore year of college in the fall and will transfer to Michigan State University as a History Education major. My goal is to become a college professor. If you have any tips and tricks you’d like to give me, I’ll take it! I’ve worked with the Park District since my junior year of high school and have adored every part of it (even the stressful bits…it’s hard to work with kids!) On my team, are Lukash Tabatchouk and EJ Locke. I’ve worked with them both and am glad to say, we’re excited to cultivate a new and exciting summer camp experience for your camper.

Be sure to read this email in its entirety.

This week our theme is “Golf! and the Great Outdoors!” as our field trips are to the Field Museum and Top Golf Schaumburg. Attached is the schedule for this week, which includes times, activities, things to bring, and other notes and such. This email includes the technical things to keep our camp running!

    • Tuesday-Friday, Drive-Through Drop-Off: This will take place Tuesday-Friday. Drive into Field’s alley and teens can walk up to the door.
    • If your child is running late or is going to be absent from camp, please notify us at your earliest convenience.

    • If someone is picking up your camper and they’re not on the approved pick-up list, I ask that you send an email with the person’s full name, as well as ensure that person brings their photo ID to pick-up.
    • If this person is a regular to picking up your child, please add them to the approved pick-up list.

Snack

    • Please send your camper with a few snacks, daily. We will eat snacks mid-morning (except for rink days where eating switches), but teens get hungry. If you know that’s your teen, check with them to make sure they’re packing enough food for themselves.

Refillable Water Bottles

Scholarship and CDM Programs

The Park District offers a Scholarship Program for those in need of financial assistance. A Childcare Discount Membership Program is also available for all full-day camps. You must apply and get approval prior to registering for camp. Complete an application here.

ACA Accreditation

The Park District of Oak Park is proud that many of our camps are accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA). This nationally recognized program, developed exclusively for the camp industry, focuses on program quality, health and safety issues. It also requires us to review every facet of our day camp operations on an annual basis. We have voluntarily submitted to this independent audit by camp experts and have earned this mark of distinction.

 Staff to Camper Ratio

For ACA Accredited Camps is 1:6 for campers ages 3-5, 1:8 for campers ages 6-8, and 1:10 for campers ages 9-13. Campers must be within the camp’s age range by the first day of the session they are signed up for. Any registration submitted without a date of birth will be held until the date is verified. Parents or caregivers will be required to sign their children out of camp on a daily basis, unless we have written permission in advance for a child to go home on their own, in which case the child will sign themselves out of camp (only allowed for campers ages 10 and up).

Health & Emergency Information

Once you register your child for camp, you will be contacted to complete a health and emergency contact form which must be submitted prior to the start of camp.
