October 17: Learn to weave 2-3 miniature turkey wing brooms using pine needles and traditional Appalachian broom-making techniques.
October 31: Create a miniature hawktail broom from pine needles and finish the series by weaving a functional whisk broom from broomcorn (sorghum).
Class Description: Explore the history of broomcorn (sorghum) and its importance in American craftsmanship, including its historical significance in Illinois. During this two-part workshop, participants will learn traditional Appalachian broom-making techniques while creating several miniature pine needle brooms in both the turkey wing and hawktail styles. The series concludes with weaving a full-sized broomcorn whisk broom. No experience is required, and all materials are provided.

Pine Needle Weaving with Raffia Sept 26/Oct 3

September 26: Learn the fundamentals of pine needle basket weaving by starting a basket using the spiral stitch and raffia as the binding material.
October 3: Continue weaving your basket while learning the figure-eight stitch. Participants will be encouraged to incorporate this decorative technique into their finished piece. And shown how to close/finish their baskets.
Class Description: Learn the art of pine needle basketry in this two-part workshop. Participants will create a coiled basket using coulter & ponderosa pine needles and raffia while learning both spiral and figure-eight stitching techniques. Along the way, you'll gain an appreciation for the history of pine needle weaving and leave with a beautiful handmade basket. No experience is required, and all pine needles have been sourced from California by the instructor.
